Many timing chains snap with absolutely no prior warning. Do not wait for symptoms before acting. However, if you notice any of the following, contact us immediately.
A rattling or grinding noise at startup or low RPM — especially when cold.
Engine management or oil pressure warning light illuminated on the dashboard.
Misfires or loss of power — signs the chain may have stretched.
If the chain has snapped the engine will crank but not fire — act immediately.
Many chains snap without any prior warning or noise at all. Replacing a noisy chain costs significantly less than repairing the damage caused by one that has already failed. We recommend preventative replacement at 9 years or 90,000 miles — whichever comes first.
The timing chain connects the moving parts at the bottom of your engine to those at the top, keeping everything moving in perfect synchronisation. If it breaks, the pistons and valves collide — causing catastrophic and often irreparable damage.
The most commonly affected engine is the N47 2.0d diesel, fitted to most BMW 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Series diesel models from 2007 to 2014. The problem was highlighted on BBC Watchdog in June 2013. The N47 has three timing chains positioned at the rear of the engine — meaning the engine must be removed to replace them properly.
BMW’s recommended longlife service interval of up to 18,000 miles is far too long. Old oil accelerates wear on timing components significantly. We recommend an oil and filter service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
