Timing chain
questions.

Prices start from £960 + VAT for an N47 (before the chain snaps), through to £1,400+ VAT for an N57. All prices are fixed and fully inclusive of the OEM IWIS chain kit, all associated parts, oil, coolant and air con regas.

Most timing chain replacements are completed as a same day service on most jobs — AM drop off, PM collection. If the chain has already snapped, the engine must be fully inspected before a completion time can be given. We will always keep you updated throughout via WhatsApp.

No — stop driving immediately. A rattling chain is in the final stages before failure. Continuing to drive risks catastrophic engine damage that turns a £960 repair into a £6,500+ rebuild. Park up safely and contact us as soon as possible.

We recommend replacing any BMW timing chain at 9 years or 90,000 miles — whichever comes first. Many chains snap without any prior warning or noise at all.

Aftermarket chain kits will fail. We have seen them stretch and snap within 10,000–30,000 miles. We exclusively fit genuine OEM IWIS Tritan coated chain kits or Genuine BMW OE parts — the same chains supplied to BMW’s production line.

The engine must be removed and fully stripped to assess damage. For N47 engines, 9 out of 10 snapped chain jobs fall in the range of £1,200–£1,850 + VAT. Severe damage is priced on inspection. We will always give you a full assessment and honest recommendation before any work begins.

Cheap second hand or remanufactured engines almost always contain old-type or aftermarket chain components — in many cases the chain hasn’t been changed at all. We regularly take on vehicles where a cheap engine swap has failed again within months. The only proper repair is a full rebuild using genuine BMW parts.

Section 02

N57 engine
& bottom end.

The N57 is prone to crankshaft bearing wear due to its high torque output, tight bearing clearances and BMW’s long service intervals. As oil degrades, the hydrodynamic film the bearings rely on thins, accelerating wear — particularly on twin and tri-turbo variants.

Timing chain replacement with new bearings and oil pump starts from £2,500 + VAT for 2WD models (xDrive adds £150). A full engine rebuild after bottom end failure is £6,500 + VAT.

Acting preventatively saves at least £4,000 + VAT.

No — and this is critical. The N57 crankshaft is nitrided surface hardened. Grinding removes this hardened layer, fundamentally weakening the crankshaft and causing it to fail again quickly. We have seen hundreds of engines re-ground and returned to us knocking or seized shortly after. We will only ever supply and fit a new genuine BMW crankshaft.

Servicing
& warranty.

Ignore BMW’s longlife service intervals of up to 18,000 miles — this is far too long. We recommend an oil and filter service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. This is particularly important for N47 and N57 engines where oil quality directly affects component longevity.

We are a BMW registered independent and use genuine BMW parts, genuine BMW oil and genuine BMW diagnostic tools. Service history is written directly to your iDrive, key and BMW’s central server. Your manufacturer warranty remains completely unaffected.

  • 2.0d minor service (oil & filter) — £149 + VAT
  • 2.0d major service — £286.50 + VAT
  • 3.0d minor — £179 + VAT
  • 3.0d major — £386.50 + VAT
  • Brake fluid service — £49 + VAT

Every timing chain replacement includes a minimum 12 month / 20,000 mile warranty as standard. The N47 genuine BMW parts upgrade includes a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty.

We use OEM IWIS or genuine BMW OE parts and genuine BMW oil on every job without exception. For timing chains we exclusively use genuine OEM IWIS Tritan coated chain kits. We will never fit aftermarket parts.

We take all bookings via WhatsApp. A £50 deposit is required to secure your booking, deducted from your final bill. Both locations are strictly by appointment only — please do not turn up without a confirmed booking.

Yes — we send photos and videos of all work throughout the repair via WhatsApp. Everything explained in plain, simple terms — no jargon, no surprises.

We do not currently offer finance or payment plans. All work is payable on completion.

We do not carry out MOTs. We specialise exclusively in BMW and Mini mechanical work — timing chains, engine rebuilds, servicing, gearbox, diagnostics, brakes and suspension.
