The timing chain connects the moving parts at the bottom of your engine to those at the top, keeping everything moving in perfect synchronisation. If it breaks, the pistons and valves collide — causing catastrophic and often irreparable damage.
The most commonly affected engine is the N47 2.0d diesel, fitted to most BMW 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Series diesel models from 2007 to 2014. The problem was highlighted on BBC Watchdog in June 2013. The N47 has three timing chains positioned at the rear of the engine — meaning the engine must be removed to replace them properly.
BMW's recommended longlife service interval of up to 18,000 miles is far too long. Old oil accelerates wear on timing components significantly. We recommend an oil and filter service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
We recommend replacement at 9 years or 90,000 miles — whichever comes first. Many chains snap without any prior warning or noise at all. If your chain is already rattling, act immediately — replacing a noisy chain costs significantly less than repairing the damage caused by one that has snapped.

If your timing chain has already snapped, the cost of repair depends entirely on the damage caused. The engine must be removed and fully stripped before a final price can be given.

There is no economy whatsoever in replacing your engine with a cheap second hand or remanufactured unit. These engines almost always contain the original old-type or aftermarket chain components — and in many cases the chain has not been changed at all. You may think you are getting a repaired engine, but you are getting a ticking time bomb.
We regularly take on vehicles where the engine has been swapped out cheaply elsewhere and the timing chain has failed again within months. The only proper repair is a full rebuild using genuine OEM components.
Aftermarket timing chain kits will fail. Anything other than genuine OEM IWIS or BMW parts will stretch, wear and ultimately fail within 12–24 months or 10–30,000 miles.
We carry out a significant number of repeat timing chain jobs every year on vehicles repaired elsewhere using cheap aftermarket kits. The customer paid once, received a substandard repair, then had to pay again — often with additional engine damage. We refuse to fit anything other than OEM IWIS or genuine BMW parts.
